Maggie loved her Nana, but sometimes she wished for her friends’ grandmothers – sweet, gentle, silver-haired ladies who took afternoon tea and had freshly baked cookies and cakes. She would like a grandmother who made lace doilies and could always make any handcrafted project go smoothly with a quick trip to the craft store. That would be the grandmother Maggie would order, but that wasn’t Nana. Instead, she bought cookies at the store and drank strong coffee with a healthy splash of cream. The authoritative tone of her voice had commanded entire hospital floors or even the smallest of family gatherings.
